For over forty years, NCEATA has been at the heart of the Hunter’s textile art scene. Founded in 1979 by a passionate group of artists, our group has grown into a dynamic community dedicated to nurturing creativity at every skill level. We champion both traditional techniques and contemporary innovation, providing a space where members can connect, share their knowledge, and push the boundaries of their artistic practice.
For more than four decades, NCEATA has been part of Newcastle’s evolving creative community, creating a space where textile art, craftsmanship and friendship come together. Since 1979, our members have shared skills, explored new ideas and celebrated the possibilities of embroidery, fibre and textile art, helping to keep traditional techniques alive while embracing contemporary approaches to making. Our contribution to Newcastle’s creative landscape is more than the work we produce—it is the knowledge we pass on, the connections we build and the encouragement we give to artists at every stage of their creative journey. Through workshops, exhibitions, demonstrations and community events, NCEATA continues to connect generations of makers and contribute to the rich, diverse and increasingly recognised creative identity of Newcastle and the Hunter Region.
NCEATA’s annual themed exhibition provides members with an opportunity to showcase their creativity and share their work with the community. We also participate in local council and community events, Craft Week activities and CraftAlive, promoting textile arts and encouraging people of all skill levels to discover the joy of making. Our annual Stitch-In Day brings members and visitors together to stitch, share ideas and enjoy the friendship and creativity that are at the heart of NCEATA.
Each year, NCEATA opens its doors and invites the community to come along, explore, and discover all that we have to offer. Visitors can enjoy a variety of demonstrations and mini workshops, offering an opportunity to see our members’ skills and creativity in action and perhaps even try something new. Our popular Trading Tables feature a wonderful selection of handmade items created by NCEATA members, making it the perfect place to find something unique while supporting local artists and makers. Whether you are an experienced textile artist, a keen beginner, or simply curious about what we do, everyone is welcome.
